Golan Heights; Assad rally

Rockets fired on Israel, Syria

The Islamic State confirmed on Thursday that it fired rockets at the Israeli resort of Eilat from the Sinai Peninsula, according to Yahoo news.

A attack on the Jewish state from Egyptian territory is rare, as Egypt is one of two Arab countries that have signed a peace treaty with the Jewish state.

Three of the rockets were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome air defence system and a fourth fell short of the town.

The Israeli army said there were no casualties, but few hours later, two Palestinians were killed elsewhere in the Sinai. Hamas authorities in Gaza said it was an Israeli air strike, but the Israeli army denied carrying out any such action.

ISIS has been waging a deadly insurgency against Egyptian security forces in the Sinai but has not attacked Israel. Both Israel and Egypt have long accused Hamas of providing support to ISIS in Sinai.

Israel provides intelligence support to Egyptian security forces fighting ISIS, Israeli authorities said.

Meanwhile the Israeli military confirmed it had struck a target in Syria in response to a tank round fired at the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights.

The military says no injuries have been reported from Wednesday’s tank fire. It says it struck “a post belonging to the Syrian regime”.

Israel is widely believed to have carried out airstrikes on arms shipments said to be destined for Hezbollah, a close ally of the Syrian government.

The Israeli attack was against a suspected weapons warehouse in Ba’ath City, Al-Masdar News reported. According to locals in Khan ‘Arnabeh, an Israeli chopper coming from the Al-Nada area was responsible for carrying out the missile attack.

A military source told Al-Masdar News that no casualties were reported by the Syrian Arab Army, despite the large presence of soldiers in the area. The military source added that the warehouse in Al-Ba’ath City had been empty.

Meanwhile Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad has said that some “Syrian” refugees in Europe are “aligned with terrorists” in an interview with Yahoo News.

Assad said this was “definitely” the case and pointed out that large-scale, devastating terror attacks can be carried out with by just a few, adding “you don’t need a significant number to commit atrocities”.
