Efforts to remove the monument, The Associated Press reported Sunday, have been met with resistance, as patriots reportedly feared the statue of Sam Houston would be taken down because the Texas politician owned slaves.

Supporters expressed concern that local activists are calling for the statue to be removed, the AP reported. It is located in a park in Houston, Texas and was erected in 1925.

Sam Houston served as the president of the Republic of Texas and is viewed as a Texas hero, even though he had refused to swear allegiance to the Confederacy when the state seceded from the Union in 1861.

The armed rally comes at a time when other cities like New Orleans are facing fierce opposition after a controversial decision to remove Confederate monuments. City officials complain that the Confederate statues do not “appropriately reflect the values of diversity and inclusion that make New Orleans strong today”.

Democrat New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has been at the forefrunt of removing Confederate memorials, and has already removed three out of the planned four statues.

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh reportedly said late last month she too was looking into removing Confederate statues in the Maryland capital. “The city does want to remove these,” Pugh told the Baltimore Sun.

In Alabama measures to prevent the removal of such monuments, are being put in place with the signing of legislation that would pre-empt counties and cities from taking down Confederate statues on public land.

After the armed rally, the Houston Chronicle newspaper however reported that threats made by Texas Antifa to take down the statue were not a real, but a “troll job”.

Houston Press’ Craig Malisow on Thursday said Texas Antifa was not affiliated with any “real anti-fascist groups in Houston” and asked readers to “calm down”.
