Multiple people have been injured after a gunman opened fire with an automatic weapon on members of the House of Representatives. The attack took place at around 6.15am.
Asked if it was a deliberate attack on Republican politicians, a Congressman told The Independent: “People know who we are. It’s not a secret that we’re practicising here….He was going after elected officials.”
Reports suggest some five people were shot. There have been no reports of fatalities, according to Fox News.
In a statement, President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence said they were both monitoring developments closely.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy,” president Trump said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected.”
