Musk obviously believes demographics could get tricky.

Musk was alluding to a New Scientist article titled: “The world in 2076: The population bomb has imploded.”

“The world’s population is accelerating towards collapse, but few seem to notice or care,” Tesla’s CEO tweeted, noting the November article in the New Scientist magazine.

In the article, Fred Pearce argues that Japan is a case study for what could go wrong in the near future.

“The world has hit peak child,” the late Hans Rosling, a professor at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, is quoted in the article.

Japan is the most well-known example of population aging with a fertility rate at 1.4 children per woman, well below what is required to sustain population growth.

The London-based magazine article says both Germany and Italy “could see their populations halve within the next 60 years” while older population mean less innovation, cultural adaptation and worse and more recession-prone economies.

But nowhere in the world is the population growing as fast as in Niger. It was 3.5 million half a century ago, which now stands at 20 million. The runaway birth rates are a disaster, The Economist reported.

Pearce does note a very unlikely silver lining: “Old could be the new young,” he says, adding that older societies are less prone to start wars and “nature, at least, would enjoy the silver lining”. But by 2100 there could be as many as 10.8 billion people living on our planet, and they could mostly be war-loving, high-testosterone individuals from Africa.

The UN has predicted the global population will reach 9.7 billion by 2050. Thus far, proposed solutions to migration has proven to be a massive ethical problem.

In 1968, two Stanford University researchers published a book titled “The Population Bomb” in which they predicted mass starvation in the 1970s and ’80s due to overpopulation.
