According to World Bank, the amount for last year is over eight percent more money than the previous year.
The increases were mainly in transfers from Europe and the USA. With $47 billion, most of the money from the US went to the countries of origin of immigrants. In second place was Germany with 12.6 billion dollars, and third was Saudi Arabia with 12.2 billion dollars.
The country with the highest capital inflows is India with 69 billion dollars. This was followed by China (64 billion), the Philippines (33 billion), Mexico (31 billion), Nigeria (22 billion), and Egypt (20 billion).
Money flowing from the rich, developed world to such countries, account for a large proportion of gross domestic product in some nations. The share of gross domestic product through money transfers from Egyptians abroad is about six percent, meaning that the land on the Nile had generated $336 billion in 2016.
Kyrgyzstan’s gross domestic product consists of 35 percent in money sent home.
The World Bank expects an even further increase in money transfers to so-called low-income and middle-income countries by 4 percent to $485 billion in 2018.
The German Navy has meanwhile rescued around 400 African immigrants off the Libyan coast. They will be brought to the Sicilian port of Catania on Tuesday, said the Bundeswehr.
The Bundeswehr participates in the EU mission EUNAVFOR MED: Sophia in the Mediterranean. On Sunday, a reconnaissance aircraft of the mission northwest of Tripoli discovered the migrants at sea in two inflatable vessels. As a result, the frigate Sachsen was commissioned by the Italian commander of the international naval force to take in refugees who had fallen into distress.
A total of 403 people from eleven nations, including 353 men, 41 women and nine children were rescued. According to the German Armed Forces, soldiers of the German Navy have so far saved more than 22 500 people from distress since 2015.
The EUNAVFOR MED mission is supposed to be directed against smuggling networks in the Mediterranean. According to the Federal Ministry of Defense, the order for the German ships reads: “Taking on trafficking!” Instead they are bringing migrants into the EU.
