Italy’s coalition partners present their choice of premier
Matteo Salvini, League leader, and Luigi Di Maio, Five Star leader, have presented their choice of premier to Sergio Mattarella, Italy’s president.
RomeThey presented Guiseppe Conte as their compromise candidate for prime minister. Conte, a little-known law professor, has scant political experience.
Salvini is likely to be appointed as interior minister, while Di Maio would head the ministries of labour and economic development.
Section nine of the coalition agreement is titled Foreign Policy, dealing mostly with prospective policy towards Russia, as both parties have forged official ties with the ruling United Russia party. The text concluded that Russia was not a military threat.
The contract also pledges to keep Italy in NATO and preserve the alliance with the United States.
The two parties have expressed diametrically opposing views on Israel. Beppe Grillo, founder of M5S, has called Israel “frightening” and “irresponsible” and said it could start a Third World War on his blog.
