Human traffickers bringing migrants accross porous Irish border into UK
Human traffickers are smuggling illegal immigrants into the UK through the Irish border, charging them steep fees on assurances that Dublin border controls are lax.
Migrants are paying huge sums for new EU passports that smugglers describe as “a guaranteed way to get into the UK”. The fee is more than 11 000 euros.
Immigrants take a plane from Paris to Dublin where they travel by road to the Northern Irish border, a according to a BBC report.
Former director general of immigration enforcement Dave Wood told the Daily Mail Online: “Once you’re into Ireland, effectively you’re into the UK.”
From Belfast the migrants take a ferry to Glasgow and then the final leg of the journey to the south. It has been nicknamed the “Irish route” since it only takes a swift passport check in Dublin at the airport before entering into Britain at any of its 275 different crossing points.
One illegal immigrant called Hamid even had a genuine Greek passport fixed to include his photo. He said he was “not worried” about being apprehended by law enforcement because of the lax security in Ireland.
