“If I were to implement a refugee policy like your chancellor, people would chase me out of office the same day,” he told the Bild newspaper with reference to German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The Hungarians, who had been occupied for decades, are “very sensitive to the issue of their national independence” Orban said. For this reason, the principle applies to his leadership as well.
“Mrs. Merkel is not responsible for the question of who lives in Hungary.” He would never allow himself to tell the Germans who could live in their country either, he said.
According to the Hungarian leader, Muslim minorities would make it impossible for Christian political parties to win election in Europe. This weekend he was speaking in the Romanian town of Baile Tusnad, where his ruling Fidesz party gathers every summer.
“The European elite has failed, and this failure’s symbol is the European Commission. The good news is that the Commission’s days are numbered,” he said.
“There’s a general shift towards the right in the whole of Europe,” he said in his annual speech on Saturday to ethnic Hungarians. “Europe’s leaders are inadequate — they are unable to defend Europe from immigration.”
The current European Commission is anti-Central Europe he explained. “There is liberalism but not democracy,” in Western Europe, and “Christian democracy is by definition not liberal”.
A redistribution of refugees to all EU countries continues to be rejected by Orban. “This is not a matter of finance,” he emphasized.
The Hungarian Prime Minister also blamed European politicians for the drownings of immigrants in the Mediterranean. He said “they encourage migrants and give the impression that it is worthwhile to come”. Therefore, appealed to EU contries to return the rescued migrants: “Every rescued must go back to Africa. Only in this way can we prevent the mass deaths at sea.”
Orban’s Fidesz party is currently a member of the European People’s Party (EPP).
