Manuel Valls’s ‘naturalisation machine’ produces 45% more French citizens per year

According to Manuel Valls, attempts to rein in naturalisations were a sign of "a France which is not sure of itself, which views the world with suspicion and therefore succombs to the temptation of looking inward". He set the target of extending the French nationality at 100 000 people every year.

According to the French online magazine Causeur, “the naturalisation machine is running at full speed”.  Since the beginning of 2016, administrative naturalisations or “naturalisations by decree” have increased by 18%, with 40 198 people accorded  the French nationality. While the numbers were halved between 2010 and 2102, in the next two years naturalisations increased by 17%.

Forecasts for this year are for a rise of 45% in French naturalisations. The vast majority of these new French citizens are non-European. According to Eurostat, 78% of these naturalised Frenchmen come from countries outside Europe. The top three countries are Marocco, Algeria and Tunisia, followed by Turkey, Senegal and Portugal.

The French interior ministry sends one thousand files per week to the foreign affairs ministry that have to check the new citizens’ identities. The torrent of new naturalisations has cause a backlog of about 10 000 files at the foreign ministry that is struggling to keep up.
