Canada’s Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has sent a disguised message to American President Donald Trump by tweeting on Saturday that all refugees were “welcome in Canada”. Trudeau has also published a picture of himself welcoming a Syrian child at the airport of Toronto in 2015.

According to a spokeswoman for Trudeau, Kate Purchase, “The Prime Minister is looking forward to discussing the successes of Canada’s immigration and refugee policy with the President when they next speak,” signalling that Trudeau intends to lecture Trump on immigration.

Seventy-five percent of Canada’s exports go to the USA, which may have inhibited Trudeau from crossing swords more openly with Trump.

The mayor of Toronto, John Tory, supported Trudeau’s veiled attack on Trump by stating that his city was “the most diverse in the world”. In a statement Tory declared:

“We understand that as Canadians we are almost all immigrants, and that no one should be excluded on the basis of their ethnicity or nationality.”

This was in reaction to Trump’s executive order, signed on Friday, to prevent “radical Islamic terrorists” from coming to America. The executive order imposed a 90-day travel ban to the U.S.A. for citizens of Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Sudan, Somalia and Yemen, as well as a 120-day suspension of America’s refugee programme.
