German anti-terror squad arrive at the station in Munich; Grafing jihadist attack investigation

Breaking: Shooting at Munich station ‘not terror’

A German policewoman was shot in head by an attacker early this morning. The assailant grabbed her gun and opened fire, also injuring bystanders at a metro station in a Munich suburb. "There was one suspect and we've got him," a Munich police spokesman told reporters at the scene.

The incident occured after police were called out to the Unterfoehring metro in a northeastern suburb of the city. Officers were summoned following reports of an altercation between passengers on a train with an individual brandishing a knife.

As in the recent Amsterdam incident, German authorities deny that the incident was terrorism-related. Police declared that there was “no political or religious motive” in the shooting, saying the attacker acted out of “personal” reasons.

When officers arrived at the S-Bahn station in the northeastern suburb of the Bavarian city on Tuesday morning, a man attempted to push them onto the tracks, The Telegraph reported. The S-Bahn line passing through Unterföhring is one of the main routes to Munich airport.

Marcus da Gloria Martins, Munich’s police spokesman, said the attacker had managed to snatch the female officer’s service pistol and fired several shots before he was shot himself. “The sole male perpetrator was motivated by personal reasons. There is no political or religious background here,” da Gloria Martins added.

Bavarian radio too cited the police saying that there was “probably no terrorism involved”. German n-tv news says he is a 37-year-old “German citizen” and a Munich resident, but would not release his name.

The officer (26) is currently fighting for her life, while the two bystanders shot suffered less serious injuries. The suspect was also seriously injured by gunfire, German police said.

Munich police said in a tweet: “Several people were injured by shots. A female police officer was badly wounded.”

Michael Riehlein, police officer said the area had been “secured”.

In May 2016 a jihadist killed a commuter and injured three others in a knife attack at Grafing railway station near Munich. Shouting “Allahu Akbar” the attacker had stabbed one person to death and slashed three others.

Meanwhile in The Netherlands, social media was still buzzing about the incident in Amsterdam, where police had denied any terror-related motives.

The victims were mainly “tourists” but according to the Israeli news outlet Ynet, three of the injured were Israelis.

Dutch weekly, Elsevier Weekblad, was told by a law enforcement official that it made no difference. “I do not want to make a statement about this. I do not think it is so important. We speak of ‘tourists’,” said the spokesman.

The Israeli embassy confirmed that three Israelis were injured in the Amsterdam car incident.
