France to ban all petrol and diesel cars by 2040
France has announced plans to ban all petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040. The new environment minister, Nicolas Hulot, has unveiled a series of measures as part of country's carbon neutral push to 2050.

The announcement follows after Volvo announced plans this week to only produce electric and hybrid vehicles from 2019. In two years, all new Volvo vehicles will have some form of electric propulsion.
Hulot said he was aware that the target would pressure France’s car manufacturers, but he added that current projects “could fulfil that promise”.
The ban includes any “new project to use petrol, gas or coal”, as well as shale oil, by that date.
Hulot’s proposals are part of a five-year-plan to encourage clean energy towards French commitments under the Paris Agreement. France intends to stop using coal to produce electricity by 2022 as well as invest €4bn to boost energy efficiency.
Low income households will receive a premium to swap their polluting cars for clean alternatives, Hulot said. “The government will offer each French person a bonus to replace their diesel car dating before 1997 or petrol from before 2001 by a new or second-hand vehicle,” he explained.
He added that the push was part the country’s “leadership” in climate policy. “We want to demonstrate that fighting against climate change can lead to an improvement of French people’s daily lives,” he said.
France is not the only country which aims to ban combustion-powered cars. The Netherlands and Norway have announced their intentions to fade out petrol and diesel vehicles by 2025 and Germany and India have voiced similar plans ahead of 2030.
Peugeot, Citroen and Renault ranked first, second and third on a 2016 list of large car manufacturers with the lowest carbon emissions, according to the European Environment Agency (EEA).
France will also take measures to restrict the use of palm oil used in biofuels to reduce indirect deforestation.
