South Africa: Highway rock attacks on the rise
A huge rock ripped through the windscreen of the car a South African family was travelling in near the coastal city of Durban, fatally injuring the children. They are not the only victims.

Four motorists have complained about rock-throwing incidents on Durban roads in the past two weeks, South African online outlet IOL reported.
Police were however reluctant to comment on whether rock-throwing incidents were on the rise, since most victims do not report such incidents, they say.
The Independent on Saturday reported that a rock was thrown from the Tollgate Bridge on to 77-year-old Dorian Kahlberg’s moving car last Thursday.
Similarly, The Mercury reported that Aliza Cilliers’ car window was shattered after being hit by rock, as she travelled on the N2 near the airport.
Both incidents come in the wake of a rock-throwing attack on the N2 near Ballito that killed two children last week.
The children died after a rock shattered the windscreen of the vehicle they were travelling in.
A SAPS spokesperson said that only the children’s deaths had been reported. No arrests had been made in that matter, she said. Police have been tasked to monitor bridges, the spokesperson said.
Tongaat Community Police Forum and community emergency response team chairperson, said: “If you are attacked, do not stop until you reach a place of safety.”
On Friday, a motorist accompanied by a friend were driving on the N3 near Brickfield Road when a pedestrian allegedly flung a rock at their vehicle.
“Coincidentally, we were talking about the attacks when it happened. I heard a loud explosion and there was glass everywhere,” the driver said. Both passengers were unharmed.
Even though they were approached the metro police for assistance, the officers did not investigate, the vehicle owner said.
“I believe there’s a trend. I’ve seen the Facebook posts and shared them, but now I understand how a victim felt after this experience.
“I have not reported the matter to police because I don’t have faith they will find the suspects,” he said.
