Many shots were heard on Monday in the area of La Busserine, in the 14th district of Marseille. A police crew was targeted by the perpetrators.

“Many empty cases were found on the spot,” police sources confirmed later. A police car had been cut off by a car driven by the two criminals, one armed with a “long gun” type Kalashnikov, and the second with a handgun, shooting in the air.

A second police crew arrived as reinforcement, but was blocked by a second vehicle where four men engaged with the police force, according to the prefecture of police. One of the police officers broke a window of the vehicle of the criminals, who immediately fled.

“The police was also the target, like the inhabitants, of the actions of these networks which have for some time now not shied away from the most violent aggression, and shooting,” Stéphane Ravier, FN senator of the Bouches-du -Rhône said.

“It has become daily life in these neighbourhoods,” says Socialist politician Samia Ghali. “What is worrying is that unfortunately children who are still at the age of innocence are confronted with situations that could only be seen in films banned for those under 18 years,” he told BFMTV.

“The gunshots caused no injuries but a person, who spontaneously came to the aid of the police, was injured in the head with a butt of a gun,” said the police spokesperson. Christophe Reynaud of the Marseille police confirmed that one resident was slightly injured during the incident.

Reynaud has ruled out terrorism as a motive, adding the shooting probably was drug-related.

Moreover, according to a witness, a man was “kidnapped by a car whose occupants fired in the air several times”, the public prosecutor of Marseille Xavier Tarabeux said. The investigation was handed over to the federal police.

Three vehicles with the masked individuals arrived in the city’s district of Busserine at 5pm local time, France’s ACTU17 said.

As police arrived on the scene they were blocked by some of the suspects in a Renault Megane, France Bleu reported.

There was a shoot-out with police before the attackers fled the scene.

Investigators have so far found 9mm and 7.62 shells at the scene which correspond to Kalashnikov bullets.

This is the second shooting in the city in a matter of weeks.

ISIS and al-Qaeda are viewed globally as Muslim fanatics “rather than the hardened criminals, money launderers and drug lords that they are,” says Hiba Kahn and global gang violence has been “Islamised”.

The link between terrorism and other related crimes, such as drug trafficking, is evident and has been recognised by the United Nations Security Council.
