The family of 29-year-old shooter says he had “severe mental health issues”, after Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) released Hussain’s identity on Monday evening.
“Due to the exceptional circumstances of this tragic incident and the public interest in knowing the man’s identity, the SIU is identifying the man as Faisal Hussain of Toronto,” a press release by the SIU noted.
The gunman had opened fire on a number of Danforth Avenue restaurants, killing two people and injuring 13 more.
He died of a gunshot wound after exchanging fire with Toronto police. An investigation will determine whether Hussain was shot by police, or if he shot himself, CBC reported.
After the mass shooting, police conducted a search of Hussain’s residence, in the city’s Thorncliffe Park neighbourhood.
Hussain’s family quickly issued an email statement to CBC Toronto suggesting that their son was struggling with severe mental health challenges, including psychosis and depression.
“Our son had severe mental health challenges, struggling with psychosis and depression his entire life. The interventions of professionals were unsuccessful. Medications and therapy were unable to treat him. While we did our best to seek help for him throughout his life of struggle and pain, we could never imagine that this would be his devastating and destructive end,” the statement read.
But btnews.online reported that Hussain apparently had been spoken-to by authorities about his online activities. Sources say Toronto Police, the OPP and the RCMP have all had an interest in his jihadist links.
Canadian law enforcement is suggesting that the terror attack was planned, and Hussain was “well known to Toronto Police” for investigations into past crimes “involving weapons and violence”.
