With the situation already electrical in Europe around failed Brexit talks with the UK, the American president waded into the debate from across the Atlantic, in an interview to the Sunday Times.
“If you do not get the agreement you want, I’ll leave the negotiating table,” said Donald Trump. The American president is expected in the UK for a three-day state visit.
“If I were them, I would not pay 50 billion dollars,” the US president said, referring to the settlement of commitments made by the United Kingdom under the ongoing European multi-year budget (2014-2020) which also covers the transitional period provided for in the London-Brussels divorce agreement of November.
In addition, Donald Trump said that London had made a “mistake” in not involving the leader of the Brexit party Nigel Farage in negotiations with Brussels, even though his party came first in the European elections.
“I really like Nigel. He has a lot to offer,” said the US president, before promising a free trade agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom as soon as London leaves the European Union.
“We have the potential to be an incredible business partner for the UK. We do not do much compared to what we could do with the United Kingdom … I think much more than with the European Union,” he said.
Trump not only praised Nigel Farage, but also former Foreign Minister Boris Johnson. He suggested that Johnson would be a good replacement for Theresa May. “Boris would do a very good job […] I think it would be excellent,” said the US president, ignoring no less than 13 other candidates who are currently in the running.
The British leader announced last week that she would resign as of June 7, facing her failure to implement Brexit.
