Matteo Salvini accused Emmanuel Macron of wanting to impose his policy on migrants and thus force Italy to keep asylum seekers, while simultaneously rejecting all the illegal immigrants who set foot on French soil.
“Do they pay me my salary to obey Mr. Macron? I don’t think so,” the Italian vice-premier told Radio24. “If there are any suggestions, that’s fine, but who are you? Napoleon is gone!”
The Minister of the Interior underlined that even if some European countries claim to be ready to take in migrants, they often make empty promises. “We’ll see if the facts follow,” he added.
As demonstrated by yesterday’s shipwreck off the coast of Libya: “Italy is doing its part, the patrol boats have rescued two boats in difficulty in the last few hours,” said Salvini, “but in the next few hours we will have the opportunity to understand how the other European countries will behave instead of expressing only moral outrage”.
For the leader of the League the problem is “to stop the smugglers” and for this Europe must pass from words to deeds: “We will have the opportunity to experience the welcome and goodness of France, Germany, Holland and Spain that often preach morality to Italy,” he said.
“We obviously won’t let anyone die, but if Macron thinks that all boats, small vessels and tiny dinghies should come to Italy, he’s wrong.”
Salvini has concentrated on immigration and security measures to restrict immigrants’ access to the country and to limit the excesses of those already living in Italy.
The end of two-year “humanitarian protection” residency permits, was previously a lower level of asylum status based on Italian law. During the five years before the law came into force, humanitarian protection was the most common “status” awarded to asylum seekers, according to the Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI).
But ISPI researcher Marco Villa pointed out that “illegal immigrants commit twenty times more crimes than nationals”.
Making headlines in Italy, a Carabiniere was stabbed to death by a migrant in Rome this week. The soldier was killed by eight slashes while trying to stop two migrant robbers.
Mario Cerciello (35) deputy police sergeant, was found dead after having suffered eight stab wounds while he was doing his job.
It all starts with a mugging. The victim, after suffering the theft, called his mobile number. But the two migrants who had committed the robbery, later answered the victim’s phone. The two, according to evidence, had tried to extort a sum of money from the victim.
On meeting the suspects, a violent scuffle ensued, and one of the two robbers pulled out a knife, killing the soldier with extreme violence.
In response, Salvini announced this week that electric stun guns will soon be handed to all law enforcement officers. The 32 tasers currently in experimental use have shown excellent results, he noted.
In a live interview on the RAI TV channel in January, Salvini explained how the immigration industry had exploded: “Immigration in Italy generated a 6 billion euro business up to last year. Many pseudo entrepreneurs previously working with the elderly and people with disabilities, switched to immigration over the years and their profits soared tenfold.”
