One of the officials suffered from knife injuries on the belly during the altercation, reported German daily Bild.
Before the attack, a 19-year-old man had approached the officials because he had recognized them after a previous mission. The police, who were traveling privately, rejected the advances of the young man. Shortly thereafter, he came back with ten to 15 people and attacked the police, according to law enforcement source.
After one of the officers had fallen to the ground, the attackers stepped on his head. His colleague and himself were injured by lacerations and had to be hospitalized at the hospital. The other two lawmen were able to leave the hospital after treatment for their bruises, abrasions and cuts.
During the night, two 19-year-old suspects were arrested. A murder commission was set up to lead the the investigation.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) expressed his horror at the incident. “We do not know all the details yet, we have to wait for the result of the investigation. But as the case currently stands, this attack on our four police officers has to be condemned in the strongest terms,” he told the Bild newspaper.
Meanwhile, the police in Mönchengladbach, a city in west Germany near Düsseldorf and the Netherlands border, arrested a three-member youth gang on Sunday, for allegedly attacking and robbing two senior citizens. The perpetrators are eleven, twelve and 15 years old. They kicked the women down and in only a few short minutes stole their handbags, police said.
The perpetrators have already been implicated in other thefts. The victims are 91 and 74 years old. The elderly woman had to be hospitalized after the robbery. The other one was unhurt.
