The celebrations for the new year had just begun and the first attack of 2020 on a doctor was already being recorded at the San Giovanni Bosco hospital in Naples.
The victim is an internist doctor who was hit suddenly and for no reason.
A few minutes after the start of the new year: a patient from the Neapolitan hospital lost control and started verbally attacking the doctor. But it did not end there. From words, the foreigner passed into action and assaulted the woman, hitting her in the face with a bottle.
The intervention of other health personnel managed to stop the man and remove him from the ward. “Last night, shortly after midnight, an internist doctor at the Neapolitan hospital of San Giovanni Bosco was verbally and physically attacked with a bottle in the face, by a probable psychiatric patient, for no apparent reason”, we read in a long post of denunciation by the Association, No one touches Hippocrates.
The assault was characterized as an attack on a woman. But there were 105 such attacks, as reported by the Italian daily Corriere , on male as well as female hospital workers.
The violence recorded throughout 2019 has risen with 23 cases more than the previous year, as doctors, nurses, security workers have increasingly become victims of patients.
However, the assault at the San Giovanni Bosco hospital is not the only event of this kind that occurred on the first day of the year. In fact, there are already two cases of violence against health personnel. It was also the association that reported the other case.
After a request for intervention, an ambulance arrived in the Barra district of Naples to provide relief to a patient suffering from an illness. Barra is an eastern quarter of the city. The area has suffered much the same fate of urban decay as the rest of the eastern periphery of Naples, a fate that includes drugs, entrenched organized crime and high numbers of African immigrants.
“In opening the door of the rescue vehicle, the doctor was hit by an mini explosion caused by fireworks thrown by unknown persons under the ambulance.
The fear was so great and the risk that the ambulance could blow up was real because of the presence of gaseous oxygen on board as well as petrol. The doctor affected by the explosion, it was reported, “is currently suffering from hearing loss and tinnitus,” explained the association.
