Lancet’s anti-hydroxychloroquine retracted as fake

A study, published on May 22 in one of Britain's most prestigious medical journals, was compiled by means of bogus data from a company called Surgisphere to trash the best and the most safe early treatment currently available to patients against Covid-19.

Published: June 5, 2020, 8:59 am

Surgisphere refused to transfer the full dataset for an independent review, and therefore medical journal Lancet “can no longer vouch for the veracity of the primary data sources”.

The World Health Organization had even halted all trials of the drug after the Lancet published the now disputed study.

The company that provided the original data, Surgisphere Corp., initially claimed it would cooperate with an independent review when several medical professionals and researchers started questioning the anti-hydroxychloroquine study.

However, it suddenly reneged on the promise to provide more information claiming it would “violate confidentiality agreements”.

The authors told Bloomberg: “As such, our reviewers were not able to conduct an independent and private peer review.”

They added: “We deeply apologize to you, the editors, and the journal readership for any embarrassment or inconvenience that this may have caused.”

Marseille epidemiologist Prof Didier Raoult dryly remarked on Twitter that “the house of cards is collapsing” in Britain regarding efforts to smear his treatment.

Raoult noted that “Harvey Risch, the epidemiology reference at Yale [University], defends the early treatment of patients infected with SARS-CoV2, using the only treatment whose efficacy and safety have been demonstrated: hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin.”

According to Riche, five studies, including two controlled clinical trials, have demonstrated significant major outpatient treatment efficacy with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin. It has been used as standard-of-care in more than 300 000 older adults with multicomorbidities.

“These medications need to be widely available and promoted immediately for physicians to prescribe.”

Meanwhile, US health officials were heavily criticised on social media for having lauded this fake study.
