Google Maps marks black businesses
The technology giant Google has integrated a function in its search engine and online map service Maps that highlights businesses run by blacks. Customers will now be able specifically go to black shops to support them, the tech firm explained.
“With this attribute we want to make search and maps more inclusive and help black entrepreneurs when they need it most,” it said. The stores are marked by a symbol that depicts a black heart on an orange background.
In addition, a training course is planned together with the US Black Chamber (USBC), through which black entrepreneurs will be able to learn how to better market their products on Google. The USBC supports African-American entrepreneurs, also with lawyers.
On the occasion of the drug-induced death of George Floyd, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced in early June that he wanted to support the “black community”. Organisations that are “committed to the elimination of racist inequalities”, will receive twelve million US dollars. An additional $25 million would also be made available for anti-racist advertising on Google Ad Grants.
In the past five years, the company has donated $32 million to race issues. Since 2018, Google has also offered an icon that companies can use to indicate that their businesses are run by women.
