French mayor: Tour de France ‘degrades the image of women’

The mayor of the French city of Rennes, Nathalie Appéré, evoked the image of women in the famous cycling competition, the Tour de France. But her position has raised a number of questions.

The controversy which the Socialist mayor of Rennes ignited, has continued. In the preparations for the Tour de France 2021, the city had been asked to be the starting point for the event. However, Nathalie Appéré had refused the invitation after consulting with the Greens.

After the discussion, the town hall declared that the race would be too expensive. Indeed, environmentalists said that the city and the metropolis would have to spend at least 700 000 euros to support the costs of organising an event which is being outsourced to a private company, reported the regional daily le Télégramme on August 10. The mayor refused because she claimed the advertising caravan would generate a “significant amount of waste”.

Environmentalists also complained that the Tour presented “a degraded image of women”. Nathalie Appéré immediately agreed with them.

But in June 2019, when the Socialist mayor inaugurated the premises of the Islamic cultural and worship center At Taqwa, boulevard du Portugal in Rennes, she appeared with a group of residents, some elected officials and young girls dressed in hijab, Ouest-France reported.

National Rally member, Julien Masson pointed out the hypocricy of Nathalie Appéré on social media. Journalist Zineb El Rhazoui also noted on Twitter: “Rennes, the city which authorized the burqini in public swimming pools. The town hall devoted 430 000€ of public money to this place where little girls wear the veil, in total violation of article 2 of the law of 1905. Islam, state religion in France?”

This message has been shared almost 3 000 times, in particular by the former Secretary of State for Youth affairs, Jeannette Bougrab as well as Aurore Berger, the current candidate for the presidency of LREM. She strongly condemned the religious practice on LCI.
