Video: Elderly white gets ambushed in Kuruman, South Africa
The footage shows the 65-year-old Giep Niemann being thrown to the ground and his belongings being snatched from his hands. A resident of the Northern Cape posted the video on Facebook on Sunday night but later removed the video due to nasty comments threatening reprisals.

Niemann’s son, Soon, also saw the video on social media for the first time on Sunday night. He said his father was in Kuruman on Saturday morning running errands. “A man pulled his cellphone out of his top pocket and my father chased him. The attack on the video happened after the incident.”
Soon says his father was led into a trap by someone who shouted at him that the burglar had run in a certain direction. When Niemann chased after the man in the indicated direction, four men attacked him from behind.
The video shows the men overpowering him, throwing him on the ground and snatching his belongings from his hands. Although many bystanders can be seen on the video, no one rushed to his aid.
Soon says his father did not lodge a complaint with the police on Saturday. “No one is safe in Kuruman anymore. Residents often complain that they are attacked in the streets in broad daylight. It is very bad that one can not even visit a shop in the town anymore,” says Soon.
