Even though he claims to be MAGA, he has taken a big step away from the movement that makes up Make America Great Again. The fact that Elon Musk has started his own party is a sign of the times, but perhaps not too much to hope for. But change rarely comes as quickly as one would like, and now, thanks to Trump, the process has begun and is now unstoppable. It will continue to grow – with or without Trump.
Donald Trump has received extensive criticism from within his own ranks, where first his reluctance to withdraw the United States from the war in Ukraine and then his attack on Iran have created strong dissatisfaction. The bombing of Iran generally seemed hasty and with dubious results. But that is not really what is important to the MAGA people. What irks them is that Trump broke one of his most important election promises: that the United States would end its war adventures abroad.
Promises of establishing peace also got Barack Obama elected, but as president he bombed country after country, without America being threatened in any way. No peace prize can change this fact. Americans generally do not want to take part in foreign war adventures, but want resources to go to their own society. Common sense really!
Trump attracted votes and support from all over American society with his promises of an end to America’s “eternal war”. Often his speeches amounted to pure isolationist policies. Not only Republicans, but true peace lovers within the Democrats, such as Tulsi Gabbard, gave him their support. It was only the Deep State that grumbled a little.
But eventually the military-industrial complex had nothing to fear. Already during his first term in office, Trump carried out a massive missile attack on Syria, a country with which the United States was not at war, and he also ordered the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. Soleimani was then the world’s leading counter-terrorist who had been crucial in defeating the Islamic State terrorist army in Syria and Iraq.
Although many people have lost faith in Donald Trump actually delivering, he has certainly done many good things too. Illegal immigrants should be deported according to the law. Men should not participate in women’s sports. Whites should not be discriminated against. Self-evident things, you might think. Again, pure common sense. But in today’s world, something outlandish and rebellious.
By far the most phenomenal achievement was the shutdown of USAID, which had been the main tool for (not so) covert influence operations against other countries. This subversive activity has, as Secretary of State Marco Rubio so rightly pointed out, only damaged the US’s reputation abroad.
As much as Trump was praised for shutting down USAID, he was equally criticized for attacking Iran on behalf of Israel. Influential figures, such as media personalities Alex Jones and Tucker Carlsson, as well as former chief adviser Steve Bannon, all believe that Trump thereby abandoned MAGA.
Elon Musk has recently launched a new party to challenge Trump, the America Party. His feud with Trump is certainly about other things, but it coincided with many losing hope in Trump. However, Musk also believes that the United States should fight for Israel, so there would hardly be any decisive change of course with him as president.
Trump responded to the criticism, somewhat simplistically: I decide what America First means!
Could it be that someone has a hold on Trump? He promised during the election campaign to publish Epstein’s client list of prominent figures who were allowed to fly on the “Lolita Express” to the billionaire pimp’s private island. The list that Trump first said he had on his desk, now no longer exists? The plot thickens, especially since there are others who say they have seen this list. Is Trump himself on the list, as Elon Musk, among others, claims?
Or is that simply the way Trump is, impulsive and bombastic?
Whatever the case may be, we must not be blinded by the personality. The whole MAGA thing is a fantastic success. The fact that so many smart people, previously relegated to the margins of public debate by the politically correct gatekeepers, have now been given a platform is truly a paradigm shift that we hardly dared to hope for. Smart people have, for once, gained influence over important authorities. Things are being put right again.
This is a movement with knowledge, resources and visions for the future. It is here to stay.
Trump cannot decide what is America First or what is MAGA. He took advantage of the fact that there was a strong conservative anti-war movement that enjoyed broad popular support. It draws its power from the sleeping majority, who abhor everything to do with wokeness and political correctness, but who have been suppressed for decades by loud, undemocratic left-wing extremists who have managed to conquer leading positions in society. Trump did not create this movement, he merely surfed the wave.
And there is no stopping it. Trump cannot be president again, but MAGA continues to move forward. There are now many who are stepping up and taking on leadership roles in various contexts.
Some say Trump is a narcissist who is only after his own fame. Others say he is part of the Deep State and a safety valve to divert the people’s anger into a harmless direction. It doesn’t really matter, because the silent majority he has awakened has now realized its power. And it will not be silenced again.
