An Innovator in Climate Dynamics

Dr. Judith A. Curry is a renowned American climatologist celebrated for her rigorous, data-driven approach to understanding weather and climate systems.

While James Hansen or Michael Mann may be deemed the “most famous” climate scientists, Curry stands out for her independent, uncertainty-focused perspective.

Curry earned a B.S. in Geography cum laude from Northern Illinois University in 1974 and a Ph.D. in Geophysical Sciences from the University of Chicago in 1982.

Her career spans prestigious faculty roles at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Purdue University, Penn State, the University of Colorado-Boulder, and Georgia Tech, where she served as Professor and Chair of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences from 2002 to 2013, retiring as Professor Emerita in 2017.

Toxic Bias of the Mainstream Climate Debate

Curry resigned from Georgia Tech in 2017, citing the “craziness” and toxic bias in mainstream climate discourse.

Post-retirement, Curry co-founded and leads Climate Forecast Applications Network (CFAN), a consultancy translating climate research into practical forecasts for sectors like energy and insurance.

Her honors include the American Meteorological Society’s Henry G. Houghton Research Award (1992), a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award (1988), and fellowships in the AMS, AAAS, and AGU.

She has served on key panels like NASA’s Earth Science Subcommittee and NOAA’s Climate Working Group.

    Data-Driven Insights

Governments have a single focus: to make climate change a political weapon rather than anything based on science.  The chance of predicting climate change is like trying to forecast the weather for the next 50 years. How accurate would that be?

Curry’s prolific output includes over 190 peer-reviewed papers on topics like hurricanes, polar climates, air-sea interactions, and climate modeling.

She co-authored influential books such as Thermodynamics of Atmospheres and Oceans (1999) and co-edited the Encyclopedia of Atmospheric Sciences (2002).

Her 2023 book, Climate Uncertainty and Risk: Rethinking Our Response, promotes adaptive strategies amid uncertainties.

In 2025, she co-authored the U.S. Department of Energy’s A Critical Review of Impacts of Greenhouse Gas Emissions on the U.S. Climate, emphasizing balanced mitigation and resilience.

Her 2022 expert report critiques overstated climate impacts in Montana, advocating nuanced policies. Through her blog, Climate Etc., Curry fosters open dialogue on science-policy intersections.

In her September 2025 feedback on the DOE report, Curry contrasted two mindsets in climate science—insisting on being right versus trying to get it right—arguing that open debate can lead to more honest assessments for both science and policy.

She is not related to actor Tim Curry, whose sister Judith was a pianist. Her husband is Peter John Webster.

Curry’s work inspires critical thinking and resilient policies in an evolving field.

She believes that most of the recent global warming was not human-caused, and had hinted that IPCC scientists are motivated by “funding”.
