In retrospect, the deployment of the National Guard to several major cities—especially “left” ones like New York and Los Angeles—suddenly seems plausible.
President Trump has announced that he will classify “radical groups” associated with “Antifa” as domestic terrorist organizations. This announcement signals a potential wave of repression against the left and far-left spectrum. The Trump administration is in the process of forging a sharp legal tool against the US left and simultaneously exerting international political pressure.
During a White House briefing, Trump responded to a neoconservative journalist’s question about whether he planned to “finally designate Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization”: “Well, that’s something I would do, yes. If I have support from the people back here—I think we’d start with Pam, I think. But I would—if you give me—I would 100% do that, and others, too, by the way. But Antifa is terrible.”
The president added that there are “other groups” he would also consider domestic terrorist organizations, noting: “You have some pretty radical groups, and they’ve gotten away with murder. Also, I’ve talked to the attorney general about bringing RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) against some of the people you’ve read about who are spending millions and millions of dollars on agitation.” In conclusion, he clarified: “These are not protests, what they are doing is a crime.” With these remarks, Trump was referring to relevant sponsors of the left-wing scene, most notably the major speculator and multi-billionaire George Soros.
As early as 2020, Trump had declared Antifa a “terrorist organization,” but at the time, he did not take any concrete steps to address it. The suspected assassin of Charlie Kirk, Tyler Robinson, currently has no direct ties to Antifa groups. However, he apparently adhered to a left-wing, woke ideology. According to US media reports, his bullets were emblazoned with slogans such as “Hey fascist! Catch!” and lines from the Italian Antifa song “Bella Ciao.” Pro-transgender slogans were also found on the bullets.
Following Trump’s remarks, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller clarified the intention to “identify, disrupt, dismantle, and destroy every left-wing organization that promotes violence and the domestic terrorist movement.” J.D. Vance, who hosted the “Charlie Kirk Show” on Monday for a change, reiterated this stance: “Violence is not okay in our system, and we want to make it less likely that it will happen.” Vance announced his intention to “target the NGO network that incites, facilitates, and perpetrates violence.”
Should the president formally classify groups or individuals as terrorists by decree, they could face massive legal pressure—even bans. Targeted sanctions would be possible for foreign groups by authorities such as the FBI or the U.S. Treasury Department. Supporters and activists could be more easily prosecuted and monitored, official activities would be prohibited, and any form of support would be punishable. The Antifa scene in Europe, already fearing for its ability to enter the U.S. after Charlie Kirk’s death, should brace itself.
