The meeting was expected to address an end to the war in Ukraine. On his online platform “Truth Social,” Trump had stated that the goal was to find out “if we can bring this ‘inglorious’ War, between Russia and Ukraine, to an end.”
German management consultant, gold expert, and bestselling author Markus Krall, on the other hand, considered the meeting in Budapest “not a good idea.” The security situation there is alarming, Krall writes on Facebook, pointing out: “In light of President Orbán’s opposition to the war, radical forces in Ukraine have certainly been preparing the option of an assassination attempt on him for some time. The immediate proximity of the Hungarian capital Budapest to Ukraine, whose border is just 300 km from the city, is helping them in this.
Such forces likely have support from intelligence circles in other countries and are likely already on the ground.”
Krall sees his assessment confirmed by events of recent years, such as the narrowly failed assassination attempt on Slovak President Fico in May 2024. Krall, who has lived in Switzerland for some time, continues: “For those who believe that something like this isn’t possible or who lack the imagination: one option would be, for example, infiltration of the Hungarian security forces or the blackmailing of one or more of their members by kidnapping family members. Such preparations could be diverted at short notice into an attempt to assassinate President Putin during the peace conference, thus creating the pretext for a major war in Europe modeled on the assassination attempt in Sarajevo in 1914.” Therefore, Budapest is “not a good choice for this meeting.”
