Steve Bannon, Donald Trump’s former campaign strategist, has predicted a third term for the re-elected president. “He will get a third term,” Bannon declared in an interview with The Economist, without elaborating. Bannon’s prediction is highly significant: the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution limits presidential terms to two election cycles.
Bannon remained vague in his allusions, but insisted: “At the appropriate time, we will present our plan, but there is a plan.” Trump will win the presidency again in 2028, “and people will just have to accept it.” When asked whether circumventing the Constitution wasn’t tantamount to a dictatorship, Bannon replied: “The only way President Trump can win and remain in office in 2028 is through the will of the American people.” He also described Trump as “an instrument of the divine will,” albeit “very imperfect” and “not particularly religious.”
These statements are entirely consistent with comments from the president’s inner circle. Trump himself recently posted a picture on Truth Social showing two “Trump 2028” caps on his desk in the Oval Office. California’s Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, already expressed doubts at the end of August that Trump would ever voluntarily leave office. “Who spends $200 million on a ballroom in their home and then moves out?” Newsom asked, referring to the current, very costly construction work at the presidential residence in Washington.
Bannon, who played a key role in Trump’s 2016 election victory and briefly served as his chief strategist in the White House, is still considered an influential ideologue of his movement. Despite a period of rift between the two, Bannon has maintained his loyalty. He holds no office in the current administration.
