On the right, a party led by General Roberto Vannacci, a former commander in the Folgore Brigade, has quickly emerged as a notable player. The movement is positioned as strongly anti-immigration, opposed to LGBT policies, and explicitly supportive of Russia.
Simultaneously, on the left, the Five Star Movement under former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte is reported to be adopting an increasingly pro-Russia stance. The party, which began as an anti-establishment force, faced earlier accusations in Italy of ties to Chinese funding. During its time in government, it signed the Belt and Road Initiative memorandum with China, an agreement later terminated by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s administration.
Italy has long served as a bellwether for broader Western political trends.
Observers view these shifts as an effort to counter voter abstention — noting that a substantial portion of Italy’s non-voters holds anti-Ukraine positions — while others see Italy once again functioning as a testing ground for emerging political trends across Europe.
