There is now a real fight looming between the president and the elected officials about Italy’s position in the EU.
Five Star’s leader Luigi Di Maio has called for impeachment under article 90 of the constitution. The article allows parliament to demand a president step down based on a simple majority vote.
If the vote is in favour, the country’s constitutional court then decides whether to push ahead with impeachment.
President Sergio Mattarella refused to endorse Eurosceptic Paolo Savona as Economy Minister, despite having received the support of prospective Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
Conte has rejected Matteralla’s offer to form an administration without Savona on which both the Eurosceptic 5-Star Movement and the League Nord as the two largest parties in a hung parliament, had agreed.
Mattarella has summoned Carlo Cottarelli, a former economist with the International Monetary Fund, for talks on Monday as he moved to appoint a technocratic government ahead of fresh elections.
