A new app called Swedish Runestones (Svenska runstenar) is making it easier for visitors to locate and learn about Sweden’s ancient runestones. This app offers an interactive map that guides users to the runestones, along with detailed information about their condition and history.
Developed by researcher Sofia Pereswetoff-Morath from Stockholm University, the app is described as unique in its focus on these historical artifacts.
One of the app’s key features is its ability to inform users about the runestones’ current state. This includes details such as whether a stone is painted, if it has been damaged, and its overall condition, which is rated on a 1-5 star scale.
According to Pereswetoff-Morath, runestones can be difficult to locate today because many have been moved from their original locations, and information about them is often scarce.
“It is difficult to find runestones, even if you are very interested,” she explained in a press release. “Many stones have been relocated and no longer stand in their original places.”
The app also addresses the issue of outdated or missing signage. Although some runestones have physical information plaques, many do not, and the existing signs may contain old or incorrect information. The digital signage within the app solves this problem by providing real-time updates on runestone descriptions, readings, and interpretations.
“With digital signage in the app, I can update the runestone text, reading, and interpretation at any time, and the user always gets the most up-to-date information,” Pereswetoff-Morath added.
Currently, the app includes around 1,300 of Sweden’s 2,000 runestones, with full coverage in regions like Gästrikland, Medelpad, Hälsingland, Uppland, Södermanland, Västmanland, Värmland, and Närke. Coverage of runestones in Götaland will be added later this fall. Additionally, the app will soon allow users to report any discrepancies, such as incorrect information or a damaged stone, by submitting a photo directly through the platform.
The Swedish Runestones app is available for download on both the App Store and Google Play, and an English version is expected to be released soon.
Fascinating Facts About Runestones
Most of the runestones found in Sweden were erected during the 11th century, though the oldest discovered date back to the 4th century. One such example is the Kylver Stone, which can be viewed at the State Historical Museum in Stockholm.
Runestones vary widely in terms of their inscriptions. The more recent ones often feature simple, personal messages such as “Harald carved this stone,” while older runestones sometimes contain incantations or mystical inscriptions, which some researchers believe were created based on a system known as gematria. This blend of personal and mystical inscriptions makes runestones an intriguing window into both the everyday lives and spiritual beliefs of early Scandinavians.
By offering a digital guide to these unique historical artifacts, Swedish Runestones opens up a new way to explore and appreciate Sweden’s rich Viking heritage.
