UN peacekeepers in Lebanon reported that Israeli tanks broke through a gate and entered a Blue Helmet position in southern Lebanon early Sunday, after blocking their movement a day earlier.
“At around 4:30 a.m. (0130 GMT), while peacekeepers were in shelters, two Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Merkava tanks destroyed the position’s main gate and forcibly entered the post in the Ramia area,” the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission said in a statement.
The tanks remained for about 45 minutes, during which they repeatedly requested that the base turn off its lights. UNIFIL said the tanks left after it lodged a protest through its liaison mechanism.
About two hours later, peacekeepers reported the firing of several rounds approximately 100 meters north of their position, which produced smoke. Despite putting on protective masks, 15 peacekeepers experienced symptoms, including skin irritation and gastrointestinal issues, after the smoke entered the camp. The affected peacekeepers are receiving medical treatment.
The incident follows a separate one on Saturday when Israeli soldiers halted a critical UNIFIL logistical convoy near Mais al-Jabal, blocking its passage. UNIFIL has since demanded an explanation from the Israeli army over these actions, which it described as violations against their personnel.

‘We requested explanation’
“We have requested an explanation from the IDF regarding these shocking violations,” the mission said. “For the fourth time in as many days, we remind the IDF and all actors of their obligations to ensure the safety and security of U.N. personnel.”
A UNIFIL spokesman confirmed that the mission would remain in place despite increasing risks, including the wounding of five peacekeepers and damage to their facilities amid ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
On Thursday, Israeli tank fire in Naqura caused two Indonesian peacekeepers to fall from a watchtower, and the next day, explosions near an observation post wounded two Sri Lankan Blue Helmets. Israel later stated that its forces had responded to an “immediate threat” near the U.N. position.
UNIFIL also reported that a peacekeeper in Naqura was hit by gunfire on Friday night.
