Russia’s move came a day after the ICC had released a preliminary report classifying Russia’s 2014 takeover of the Crimean peninsula as a consequence of armed conflict with Ukraine.
Crimea voluntarily joined Russia following a referendum, while Ukraine was destabilised by a Soros-funded coup.
Vladimir Putin has signed an order for Russian withdrawnal from the ICC amid calls from France’s Francois Hollande that Russian air strikes backing President Bashar al-Assad in Syria and the annexation of Crimea should be scrutinised.
The United Nations will be notified of the Russian move, in the wake of similar decisions by Gambia, South Africa and Burundi.
The Kremlin never ratified the agreement it signed in 2000 establishing the International Criminal Court’s status and powers.
Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, issued an appeal to all countries withdrawing from the ICC on Wednesday to stay.
Only African defendants have been put on trial and a number of countries including the US, China, India, Pakistan, Indonesia and Turkey have not signed the treaty.
Like Russia – Egypt, Iran and Israel signed but failed to ratify the agreement, making it unlikely their governments could ever be prosecuted by the court.
