His appointment comes after the resignation of Manuel Valls, who quit to run for president next year.
An Ifop-Fiducial opinion poll published on Tuesday however suggested that Valls’ chances are slim as no left-wing candidate has any hope of entering into the second round of the elections.
The French politicical elite is in jitters about Marine Le Pen’s anti-immigrant, anti-European Union National Front as well as upsets earlier this year in Britain, the United States, and this week in Italy, and suddenly clambering to embrace more “populist” stances.
“The world has changed drastically in a matter of months,” Jean-Marie Le Guen, a worried minister and close ally of Valls, told RTL radio. “The extreme right is on the threshold of power. The right is more brutal than anything we’ve ever seen.”
As interior minister since April 2014, Cazeneuve has instituted prolonged emergency rule in the country after Islamist militant attacks killed more than 230 people since January 2015.
Bruno le Roux was named to replace Caseneuve as interior minister. Le Roux, a member of the French-American Foundation, along with Daniel Cohn-Bendit and Bernard-Henri Lévy, is included in the list of 89 European personalities who have been banned by the Kremlin since May 2015.
Following the last municipal elections, Bruno Le Roux joined his listed colleagues, in a letter dated July 24, 2014, to launch a dirty fight against the municipal Front National, via grants of a minimum of 1000 euros to the League of Education to attack the FN’s ideological positions.
But polls so far suggest that the Left faces clear humiliation in next year’s presidential election after five years in power, with the fake right candidate Francois Fillon facing Le Pen in the last round.
