Page was scrutinized by the FBI on suspicion of private communications with senior Russian officials before Trump’s election victory, but they could find nothing against him.
The banker who founded an investment company in New York, Global Energy Capital, drew the attention from anti-Putin Democrats during the summer for his pro-Russian speech.
Page, 44, told Russian media that he’ll be in Moscow until December 13 due to “meetings with influential businessmen and thought leaders”.
He may deliver a lecture at Russia’s New Economic School on December 12, the school’s press service told TASS on Thursday. “The issue of Carter Page’s delivering a lecture at the New Economic School is being looked at,” Denis Klimentov, a spokesman for the School, TASS reported. “It may take place on Monday, December 12.”
Page used to work in Moscow with Merrill Lynch. In July the US media paid attention to the fact that Page criticized the US policy towards Russia while talking to students and journalists.
He complained that there was a “hypocritical focus on ideas such as democratization, inequality, corruption and regime change” in Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union by Democrats and their media surrogates.
During the presidential campaign Page noted that Washington and Moscow shared common goals and decried the “arrogant” foreign policies by the Obama administration which often ignored mutually shared interests.
He has also highlighted the importance of mutual respect and understanding on a personal level between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
Page says he often faces skepticism over his business ties to Russia and his favorable view of its leadership.
“It is a question I get so frequently—I lost count many decades ago,” Page told Bloomberg in March this year. “There’s a very negative conventional wisdom that these [Russians] are all crooks and bad guys.”
Prior to becoming an advisor on foreign policy for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, Page, who is an established American oil industry consultant, worked with Russian energy giant Gazprom. He is believed to have extensive contacts, experience, and a realistic attitude towards bilateral ties.
