But migrants in Germany have committed 142 500 crimes in just six months, police figures revealed in November this year.
This was the equivalent of 780 crimes a day – an increase of nearly 40 percent over 2015, according to data from Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office. The data includes only those crimes in which a suspect has been caught.
But the newspaper Die Welt commented on its website that illegal migrants from North Africa were seldom deported from Germany.
It cited a government response to the opposition far-left Linke party question, saying that a combined total of 281 Moroccans, Tunisians and Algerians had been deported from Germany in the first three quarters of 2016 after more than 13 000 North Africans arrived in the country last year.
Most of the migrants deported from Germany in the first three quarters, some 14 000, were from the West Balkans, Die Welt reported.
Fifty per cent of Germans think Merkel is doing a slightly better job on refugee policy, after she toughened her stance on dual citizenship, while 45 per cent think her work in this area is “rather bad”, the survey of 1 234 people conducted in December showed.
The latest survey on German attitudes towards immigration was conducted by the Forschungsgruppe Wahlen for the German broadcaster ZDF.
Almost two-thirds, 60 percent, worry that the cost of refugees means money is being taken away from elsewhere, but more importantly more than half, 52 percent, of Germans fear that migration will push up crime rates.
They have been right too. Germany’s Federal Criminal Office, or BKA, released statistics in June about migrant criminality last year, showing crime ticking up.
Theft offences increased by 11.9 percent to 57 146 cases last year, the majority of them were committed in railway stations and on trains. German Federal police chief, Dieter Romann, told the BerlinOnline Stadtportal that crime is increasing by 31.6 per cent to 436 387 offences last year.
Germany’s cultural and social values are not on the forefront as only a third thought that their culture was under threat due to the refugees.
