Marine Le Pen was seen entering an elevator at the building, according to a Reuters witness, but she did not speak to reporters gathered there.
A spokesperson for Le Pen has confirmed that she was in New York. George Lombardi, a friend of both Le Pen and Trump who lives in Trump Tower, said he had hosted a party for the French politician with about 30 US-based friends and supporters on Wednesday night, according to The Financial Times.
Although Lombardi said she did not meet with anyone in the Trump camp, Le Pen was spotted at Trump Tower having coffee at the Trump Ice Cream Parlor, with three men, including her partner Louis Alliot.
His party earlier was attended by people who “have the ability to help her with the campaign in France”, Lombardi said.
“We call it the Normandy Landing. That gives you already an idea of what we think her battle is going to be. Basically, Europe, France especially, but also other countries, Italy and so on, there is a big battle going on there, we call our populist very similar to Trump. The French Trump.”
Wallerand de Saint-Just, a senior figure in National Front, said the symbol of Le Pen in the Trump Tower was “a good thing”, adding that “Donald Trump’s election shows that everything is possible”.
“Look at the Brexit vote, it happened in a seemingly politically stable country,” he said. “Marine Le Pen’s message is ‘The French first,’ and Donald Trump’s message is ‘America first.’ It’s the return of the Nation.”
Le Pen’s visit was testament to her power, adding credibility to her presidential bid. During a press conference, after Trump’s victory she told AFP: “The election of Donald Trump is good news for our country.”
Le Pen revealed recently that Trump had her telephone number “contrary to President Hollande”, “since long before he was elected in the primaries”.
Le Pen has overtaken centre-right candidate François Fillon to be the frontrunner, according to the latest poll by Ifop-Fiducial. She is expected to earn enough votes in the first round of presidential voting in April to enter a second round election set for May 7 already.
She is leading the race for the first time in the campaign as the Republicans candidate Fillon struggles, trailing at least 2 percent behind Le Pen, Paris Match revealed.
