Geert Wilders is on track to become the Netherlands' next prime minister after the elections in March 2017.
The leader of the Dutch Party for Freedom (PVV), tweeted that his party was now the biggest party in the polls.
According to the latest poll of Maurice de Hond, the Netherlands’ most famous pollster, the PVV would hold the most seats in parliament if elections were held today with 33 seats in the 150-seat lower chamber.
Wilders is virulently anti-Islam, calling Europe’s open-borders policy ” suicidal”. His main goal is to end “the Islamization” of Europe and particularly of the Netherlands.
The party holds 15 seats in the current parliament, having gained about 10 percent of the vote at the 2012 general election.
The PVV appears to be gaining ground as a result of an ongoing witch hunt against Wilders, who is being made to stand trial because of ” inciting hatred and discrimination against the Dutch Moroccan community”.
In a televised statement on the last day of the trial, Wilders denied inciting racial hatred and added that if he was convicted, “millions of Dutch citizens will be convicted with me”.
He reminded the court that Moroccans did not belong a specific race and thus rubbished their charges of racism.
Wilders described his party as part of a growing anti-establishment right-wing movement that encouraged the Britons to vote for Brexit and disenfranchised Americans to support Donald Trump in the 2016 US presidential election.
