Judge says stabbings are a result of badly designed kitchen utensil
Dozens of people have been fatally stabbed in London in the first quarter of 2018. A British judge has now proposed a very unusual nationwide programme to stop the killings.

His strange idea is to file down the points of kitchen knives as a solution to the country’s soaring knife crime epidemic.
Last week in his valedictory address, retiring Luton Crown Court Judge Nic Madge spoke of his concern that carrying a knife had become routine in some circles and called on the Government to ban the sale of large pointed kitchen knives, The Telegraph reported.
The latest UK figures show stabbing deaths among teenagers and young adults have reached the highest level in eight years, and knife crime overall rose 22 per cent in 2017.
Madge said laws designed to reduce the availability of weapons to would-be offenders has had “almost no effect”, since knives are available from a cutlery drawer.
“Accordingly, it is very easy for any youth who wants to obtain a knife to take it from the kitchen drawer in his home or in the home of one of his friends.”
The judge explained that the most common knife taken from the kitchen was between 20 and 25 centimetres, long and pointed. “Why we do need kitchen knives with points?” he asked. “It might even be that the police could organise a programme whereby the owners of kitchen knives, which have been properly and lawfully bought for culinary purposes, could be taken somewhere to be modified, with the points being ground down into rounded ends,” he added.
Some 37 people have been fatally stabbed in London only since the beginning of the year. Met Police records show 37 443 recorded knife offences and 6 694 recorded gun offences across the UK in the year up to September 2017.
In London, the problem was even more pronounced than the rest of the country, with 12 980 knife crimes taking place in the capital – up by 2 452 more than the previous year.
Some 22 were killed in March, giving London a higher murder rate than New York. The US city, much larger, had a mere 21 killings in comparison.
Neither the UK Office for National Statistics, nor the Home Office, nor the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime, has published any data on the ethnicity of the perpetrators.
While politicians blame “poverty” and the faulty design of kitchen utensils for the increase in knife crimes, new research published gives the most comprehensive picture to date of the economic situation of Pakistani and Bangladeshi immigrants responsible for the rise in knife crime.
