AfD under pressure over Israel trip
Specialist committees in the Berlin House of Representatives usually undertake a journey during the designated legislative period. However, there are mounting problems with the planned trip of the Economic Committee to Israel.
Published: October 3, 2018, 8:53 am
The reason: the committee chairman Frank-Christian Hansel is from the AfD and other members have refused to travel to Tel Aviv with him. Among other things, the AfD politician is accused of being close to “right-wing extremists in Chemnitz”.
But Hansel has rejected the smear campaign. “The AFD is the party of political realism from the middle of society.” He added that it was motivated by politics.
“Apart from trying to discredit the AfD, I do not see what’s behind it. In my professional life before the AfD, I led economic delegations, for example to Cuba and Mexico, on behalf of the Federation of German Industry and the Federal Ministry of Economics. I know very well what foreign trade promotion means and know how to move on a diplomatic level,” he says.
The Berliner Morgenpost described his participation in the march in Chemnitz as the obstacle. “That’s a cheap pretext. I have positioned myself clearly and publicly in Chemnitz.”
He said certain extremist groups were used to discredit the AfD. “We vigorously reject attempts to escalate leftist or right-wing extremists or other provocateurs who want to undermine peaceful citizens’ protest, and see it as a tool to discredit AfD.”
CDU chief of economic policy Christian Gräff does not want Hansel to go. “In the current situation, I can not imagine going to Israel with the committee and its chairman,” he says. Basically, while he believes that Hansel belongs to the moderate wing of the AfD, he thinks he will be embarrassed.
“But I do not feel like I having to be constantly afraid in Israel that he says something embarrassing,” said Gräff. “I do not want to constantly have to look out for him, to be careful that something does not slip out.”
Other members of parliament do not publicly want to talk about the issue.
Hansel said in response that the AfD would support Israel. “Me and my party have made a clear commitment to the state of Israel and Judaism in Germany,” he noted.
