Solidarity and mutual help, inherent to the Christmas period, have probably escaped some. As reported by France Bleu, the premises of the Red Cross in Dordogne were the target of a burglary in Périgueux, on Monday, December 24. Two days earlier, on Saturday, similar events had occurred in the Marne.
In Dordogne, the robbery occurred on Monday and were discovered by a volunteer before Christmas Eve.
“One window shutter was broken and two doors were forced,” he said, adding, “We need to review our first aid equipment to see if antything has disappeared.”
“On the eve of the holiday season, we feel deep indignation and great sadness,” said Carolane Jouy-Tasso, responsible for communication of the Red Cross in the department. A complaint was filed following these robberies.
On Saturday, December 22, in Reims, in the Marne, that other premises of the Red Cross were robbed. A video projector, a laptop, a generator, 300 survival blankets and rescue equipment were stolen.
Meanwhile, figures from the International Prison Observatory (OIP), show hundreds of prisoners sleeping on the ground, because of an exceptional occupancy rate.
On Wednesday, December 26, the OIP tweeted edifying statistics about the French prison world, accompanied by a new record: “A terrible new record was reached on December 1, 2018”.
The French association, founded in 1990, revealed that of the 71 061 detainees in the country (compared with 69 914 in 1 December 2017), “22 890 are in prisons that are more than 150 percent full”, and “nearly 30 percent are in pre-trial detention” with “1 506 are sleeping on the floor”.
The “overall prison density”, is 118,2 percent, an increase compared to 1 December 2017 (117.8 percent).
