On the second Christmas holiday – Boxing Day – around 100 people were brought to mainland Europe. According to German daily Tagesspiegel, there were almost 200 on the Christmas Day itself. Another 39 migrants came to the beach on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura.
The majority of the migrants were taken in near the Moroccan coast. There are some Spanish islands, as well as the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, which are repeatedly the target of Africans who want to immigrate.
The German ship Alan Kurdi meanwhile took on 32 migrants 17 nautical miles off the coast of Libya, said the organisation operating the ship Sea-Eye. The ship had only arrived in the region a few hours before the emergency call.
The team had previously received the request for help from the AlarmPhone initiative. According to the Tagesspiegel, the migrants admitted that they were Libyans. The ship then headed to the Italian island of Lampedusa.
