Italian government signs decree to ban NGO migrant rescue ships
Italy on Wednesday closed its ports to NGO-run migrant-rescue ships because the Coronavirus crisis means they can no longer be classified as places of safety.
RomeThe foreign, interior, transport and health ministers signed a decree to this effect which is valid for the entire period of the emergency.
Former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini had urged the Conte administration to act swiftly to duplicate his popular closure of ports to illegals on Twitter.

Italians miss Salvini more than ever, and it is likely that the public reaction to the Italian government’s mishandling of COVID-19 will put him and the Italian center-right in power. The Conte-2 government knows that, and is desperate to do whatever it can to keep itself in power. The leftist PD is now calling the shots in the Italian government, as its partner, the M5S, is in complete disarray if not collapse. Certainly the current government was looking for a justification to not have to slavishly adhere to the mindless requirements of the Dublin Convention, and closing Italy’s ports to the NGO “migrant express” was a way to do so. In fact, the NGO operations at present should be questioned. Coronavirus is present in Libya, and their operations to assist illegal migrants who may carry it and who seek to enter Italy illegally certainly should be looked into.
