While students will soon return to school on May 11 in France, cases related to the Coronavirus in children have been observed in Europe.
More and more children are testing positive for the Coronavirus and simultaneously have symptoms similar to those of Kawasaki childhood disease. The syndrome is rather rare, and causes inflammation of the walls of blood vessels.
The NHS in the United Kingdom warned about it on Tuesday, April 28, reported French weekly Le Point. “In the past three weeks, there has been an apparent increase in the number of children of all ages with multisystem inflammatory conditions requiring intensive care in London and other parts of the UK.”
Similar cases have been observed in Italy and Spain. French pediatricians are worried after children between 2 and 10 years old with these symptoms have been observed in Parisian hospitals. Twenty cases have already been identified in Île-de-France, according to French daily La Dépêche.
This accumulation is “abnormal” says Isabelle Kone Paut, professor of pediatric rheumatology at the Kremlin-Bicêtre hospital in Paris. In the columns of Le Point, she said that the facts have been observed since March.
“I receive an excess of calls by resuscitators and pediatricians for atypical cases of Kawasaki disease,” she said. According to the British Secretary of State for Health, Matthew Hancock, “it is a new disease which we believe may be caused by the Coronavirus”. Hancock spoke on LBC radio recently.
Scientists believe that Kawasaki disease could start when stimulated by a virus. But it is still too early to establish a link between Covid-19 and these hyper-inflammations. They do not exclude other agents other than SARS-CoV-2. The situation is nevertheless taken seriously in France. Isabelle Kone Paut believes that this is “still only a report”, but that it is necessary be alert to “identify, follow and take charge of all cases”, she told Le Point.
