The debate on racism in the United States has been taking a particularly violent turn, to the point that a difference of opinion ended up causing the death of a young mother on July 5.
Jessica Doty Whitaker’s companion recounted the dismal story to the American media outlet The Daily Wire. That day, at 3 am the couple went for a walk in Indianapolis with two friends, when they met another group, described as supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement. An argument then breaks out, but it does not lead to any immediate violence.
It was only later, when Jessica Doty Whitaker, her companion and her friends resumed their journey, that the drama occurred. In reality, they were ambushed by the other group which had taken up a position further along their path.
They opened fire on the couple, and then ran away, said Jose Ramirez, the companion of the victim. The latter, also armed, responded. “It was just a reflex, I didn’t see anyone. Fortunately I didn’t hurt anyone,” he said.
According to the father of Jessica Doty Whitaker, she had shouted “All lives matter” to the BLM supporters. On Facebook, he also wrote that “several black assailants shot [his daughter] in the head”. He added that he wanted “justice” for his daughter.
Jose Ramirez, for his part, felt that his partner “should not have lost her life – she had a three-year-old son whom she loved deeply. It’s hard to tell him that his mom is in heaven”.
