Spanish police made the announcement on Friday August 21. The news outlet reported that 15 people were arrested in connection with the dismantling of networks of migrant smugglers. Electronic equipment was also seized.
According to the details released by the Spanish police, the networks leave Morocco to end in Bayonne. Some migrants were approached in Morocco, others upon disembarking on the Spanish coast. For 200 euros, the smugglers promised to take them to France. The two networks have so far organised journeys through Madrid, Bilbao, Vitoria, Donosti and Irun.
According to France Bleu, one of the networks took migrants on regular bus lines from Irun, at the Franco-Spanish border, while the other took them by car to a refugee reception center in Bayonne.
Once in the Basque city, migrants were given tickets to continue their journey in Europe thanks to a mobile app on a phone. Investigators said they made a key arrest in Navarre. This smuggler had been caught several times with illegals in his company.
The Spanish police claim to have arrested two network leaders, 15 people in total (six in Bilbao, three in Vitoria/Gasteiz, three in Madrid, two in Irun and one in Lleida in Catalonia). Police also seized 3 000 euros and 24 cell phones.
