Stranded in a Swiss ski resort due to quarantine, nearly 200 British skiers preferred to make their escape during the night of Saturday 26 to Sunday 27 December.
This could serve as a scenario for an upcoming remake of the classic movie, The Great Escape. There is no doubt, in any case, that a director could draw inspiration from the incredible departure in the middle of the night of several hundred British holidaymakers, trapped in their luxury ski resort.
On December 21, reported Le Courrier International, Switzerland demanded the quarantine of British nationals present on its soil, following the discovery of a more virulent mutation of the virus in England.
The measure was then applied to some 400 British skiers who came to enjoy the snowy slopes of the resort of Verbier, south of the Swiss Alps.
At the time of the announcement of the quarantine, scheduled for ten days, a dozen skiers immediately took the road back. Two hundred others had apparently preferred to wait until nightfall to slip away, taking advantage of the darkness.
“Many remained in quarantine for a day before fleeing with the cover of darkness,” confirmed Jean-Marc Sandoz, the communications officer of the Swiss municipality, quoted by LCI.
For him, their departure was perfectly understandable, considering the untenable quarantine: “Imagine four people staying in a hotel room of 20 m²!” Jean-Marc Sandoz even goes so far as to speculate that the tourists on the run felt “trapped” and therefore left. They were “a little angry with Switzerland”.
