Macron and Le Pen enter the second round
The first results of the election in France for the first round are in. As was the case five years ago, Macron and Le Pen will face off in the runoff in two weeks time.
ParisAccording to the projections, incumbent French President Emmanuel Macron is ahead of his challenger, Marine Le Pen of the Rassemblement National, with 28,1 percent of the vote. Le Pen received 23,3 percent of the vote. Jean-Luc Melenchon on the left received 20,8 percent of the votes and was eliminated in the first round. Eric Zemmour only received about eight percent of the votes.
This is the second time that Macron and Le Pen meet in the runoff, as they did in 2017. At that time, Macron and his newly founded En Marche party won the election with 66,1 percent. This time, the result is likely to favor Le Pen because Macron failed to push through promised reforms. Voter turnout may have been slightly lower than in the last election.
As in Hungary, the war in Ukraine may play a role in deciding the winner.

Le Pen will be the next president unless people want more immigrants and taxes.
