One can just as easily withdraw from climate protection – it is only a question of political will.
The previous – and possibly next – US President Donald Trump had already announced that he would withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. And the new Dutch right-wing government under Prime Minister Dick Schoof will be doing the same.
Radical changes to the climate protection plans of the previous government have been announced. In particular, the planned reforms in the agricultural sector, which aimed to reduce nitrogen emissions and introduce sustainable farming methods, have been put on hold – a few years ago they had led to massive farmers’ protests and the rise of the new farmers’ party, the BBB.
The new Minister of Agriculture, Femke Wiersma, who represents the BBB, has drastically cut the budget for climate protection measures. Instead of the originally planned 24 billion euros, only five billion euros will now be made available.
The old parties are very dissatisfied with this change of course. Laura Bromet of the Greens described the abrupt end of the agricultural reforms as “administrative vandalism”. Thom van Campen from the liberal VVD, also expressed his incomprehension.
