Apple's Vice President of Inclusion and Diversity, Denise Young Smith, a black woman, who last month said "blue-eyed blonde men" can be diverse, has stepped down from her job after only six months.

Soon after her comments, Young Smith announced that she was leaving the company after 20 years. She had been defending Apple’s overwhelmingly white and male leadership.

“Diversity is the human experience,” Young Smith said in early October at the One Young World Summit in Bogota, Colombia. “I get a little bit frustrated when diversity or the term diversity is tagged to the people of colour, or the women, or the LGBT.

“There can be 12 white blue-eyed blonde men in a room and they are going to be diverse too because they’re going to bring a different life experience and life perspective to the conversation,” Young Smith said.

Even though her comments were welcomed by many, race-baiters saw an opportunity to force her to resign.

“I regret the choice of words I used to make this point. I understand why some people took offense,” Young Smith stated in an internal memo on 13 October. “My comments were not representative of how I think about diversity or how Apple sees it. For that, I’m sorry.”

She had been serving as human resource chief before taking her position in diversity and inclusion in May.

Young Smith has been replaced by a white Social Justice Warrior, Christie Smith, TechCrunch reported on Thursday. Smith, who spent 17 years at Deloitte, will report to Apple’s VP for People Deirdre O’Brien, the website reported. She will not report directly to CEO Tim Cook, unlike her predecessor.

“We deeply believe that diversity drives innovation,” an Apple spokesman said in a statement to TechCrunch. “We’re thrilled to welcome an accomplished leader like Christie Smith to help us continue the progress we’ve made toward a more diverse workplace.”

In 2017, only 3 percent of Apple’s leaders were black, and women held only 23 percent of tech jobs, according to Fortune. Apple said female leadership stood at 29 percent. “Meaningful change takes time,” the company said in its diversity report.

“We’re proud of our accomplishments, but we have much more work to do,” it added.

One of the commenters on TechCrunch remarked dryly: “Be a real shame if they just hired people based on merits rather than just picking people based on race or sex…”
